Charles William Shirley Brooks was an English journalist and novelist. Born in London, he began his career in a solicitor's office. Shortly afterwards he took to writing, and contributed to various periodicals. In 1851 he joined the staff of Punch, to which he contributed "Essence of Parliament," and on the death of Mark Lemon in 1870 he succeeded him as editor. He published a few novels, including Aspen Court and The Gordian Knot

Brookfield Zoo Chicago, is a zoo located in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield, Illinois. In 1919, Edith Rockefeller McCormick donated land she had received from her father as a wedding gift to the Cook County Forest Preserve District for the development as a zoological garden. The district added 98 acres to that plot and in 1921, the Chicago Zoological Society was established.

It quickly gained international recognition for using moats and ditches instead of cages to separate animals from visitors and from other animals. The zoo was also the first in America to exhibit giant pandas. In 1960, Brookfield Zoo Chicago built the nation's first fully indoor dolphin exhibit, and in the 1980s the zoo introduced Tropic World, the first fully indoor rainforest simulation and the then-largest indoor zoo exhibit in the world

Joshua Brookes was a British anatomist and naturalist. Brookes studied under William Hunter, William Hewson, Andrew Marshall and John Sheldon in London. He then attended the practice of Antoine Portal and other eminent surgeons at the Hotel-Dieu de Paris.

Brookes became a teacher of anatomy in London, and the founder of the Brookesian Museum of Comparative Anatomy.

Brookes was the first to place the Cheetah in its own genus, which is established in 1828 as Acinonyx. The generic name, Brookesia, in in honour of Joshua Brookes
