I have been away again as usual Salmon inspecting. I am so very much obliged for the Venison. It was simply magnificent. I send you copy of my Fisheries report for 1875. Please read page 50 and examine the plans. May I be so bold as to ask Your Royal Highness if you think I might present a copy of my 'Log Book' to Her Majesty and if so what are the proper steps to approach Her Majesty. I should indeed be pleased if I might be allowed to forward a copy. Again thanking Your Royal Highness for the Venison.

Allow me to thank you for very much indeed for the three little hedgehogs one big and two little which arrived all right this morning. The little fellows were certainly in a state of hybernation. The big one is quite tame. I think I shall fat him up and eat him on Christmas Day as a speciality.

I have taken the liberty of sending you some green Bearded Oysters grown by my friends the Messrs Wiseman of Paglesham, Rochford, Essex. These are the green Beards about which I wrote in 'The Times'

The green of the Beard is derived from the [sporales?] of the 'silkweed' a sample of which is enclosed. The Messrs Wiseman and myself wish to introduce them to the London Market. I think you will find them very good. I regret much that I was not able to attend Your Highness' commands at the Fish Museum I was away on duty enquiring into 'Crabs and Lobsters'

I have taken the liberty of sending you a sample of American oysters which I have just received. They are in a small box forwarded by rail. Those at the top of the box come from Prince Edward Island. Those at the bottom from Chesapeake Bay and are sent by the Smithsonian Institution of Washington.
I have a project with Mr. Pope (one of the great men in Prince Edwards Island) to import large quantities of these Oysters which abound in about the island as food for the British Public. I should like to have your (private) opinion of them both cooked and raw. I have kept some of the Oysters intending to breed from them if possible and establish a breed in England

I am indeed most obliged to you for your very kind present. It is very beautiful and quite apropos to the work I like so much. I shall value it very much and am deeply grateful to you for it. I am looking forward some day next month to show you over the Brighton Aquarium I shall be free after 10 April. I have now [got?] to go to South Wales and Devonshire on Inspection duty I have not forgotten the Cray fish and the Swans.

I can not thank you enough for your great kindness in sending me the great curiosity and perfectly unique [?] Stags Foot. It has already been very much admired I have sent for an Artist to make a drawing of it and I will take care that it is properly put up in situ. Having obtained your permission I will put a notice of this strange event in 'Land & Water' I am indeed obliged for your kindness. I beg to enclose a notice we have [?] relative to the Fresh Water Fisheries Act.

I have had a beautiful drawing of the Deer's leg in situ made, and intended (as you gave me leave) to publish it in this week's Land & Water. On receipt of the drawing from the Keeper I sent for the Artist who said he could make a nice drawing out of it. So with your permission we will wait till both blocks are ready - I have lent the Artist a drawing of a German Red Deer which you saw when you kindly came here - to fill up the details. As regards the foot itself - I sent it to my friend [Rulich?] he is a working German Stuffer the very best in the world he does the work for many of the big shops - He has some splendid things at his place. If you could call I am sure you would be pleased with the heads and horns.
I have been confined to the house with bronchitis and assure you do not like being on the sick list at all.

The Artist who is drawing the Red Deer has been ill and tells me he can not let me have the blocks for this week's 'Land & Water' he has promised me faithfully for next week. [Rulich?] reports he has made a capital job of the foot in situ on the tree branch. I have written about the Duke of Edinburgh's Pike in L & W tomorrow and hope you will approve
I beg to enclose a copy of a paper I am sending round to the chief Fishing ports on the North and East of England and Scotland, there are about 2800 fishing Smacks in the North Sea.
This is quite a new idea and I hear the Fishermen accept the proposition very kindly and now I beg to place a proposition before your Royal Highness

I have been at work nearly all day at the Deers Foot [?]. the Printer said he must have 20 lines more to fill up the page see copy enclosed so you see I have taken the liberty of using the information Your Royal Highness kindly sent me this morning. If you will kindly send copies of the paper to owners of Deer Forests in Germany and I will forward copies as I am anxious to obtain as much information as I can for you.

[Breton?] has been here. He agrees with me that the marks in the last Fox's skin are the marks of a dog's teeth and I have tried the holes with the fangs in the skull of a hound and they match exactly. I will look up the tests of Strychnene Please send me the other Foxes - I agree with Your Royal Highness the matter is very mysterious and ought to be settled.
