Dear Mr Buckland
I had the pleasure of receiving your friend Mr. [Wattel] yesterday afternoon & think him a very intelligent, very modest man. He accompanied me to a sort of public Conference, in which I had to take the chair, about Sea-fisheries, & I introduced him to our Minister of Agriculture & ½ a dozen of our leading men. This morning I shall meet him & he shall then be introduced to all our Foreign Commissioners, such at least as are here. The next time you do me the honor of writing pray mention the state of your health. On Saturday (tomorrow morning) an official visit to the English Dept. is planned, in which my brother & I will show your Exhibits, as well as we can!

With my best compliments to Mrs. Buckland, & to your sister Mrs [Bunyan?] whom I had the pleasure of meeting the other day,

Allow me most heartily to congratulate you on your success here. I have had great pleasure in looking over your exhibit, though I do know most of the objects, having seen them in company with yourself. I have just returned from the presentation of prizes
by the Crown Prince, and had great pleasure in hearing your name honourably mentioned as the winner of a gold medal. I was still more pleased to hear from Herr v Bunsen that you are vy much better. I sincerely hope you will vy soon be in your usual
good health again. I am making some WORD observations here which are proving vy interesting. You, and Mr Walpole shall have the result when I pass through London on my way home

My dear Mr. Buckland
I am truly delighted to learn from your letter of the 24th that your health has derived benefit from your stay at Margate. No time shall be lost by me in obtaining from the Office of sending to you the calculation, with vouchers, of the carriage to Berlin
The cost of carriage from Berlin to London devolves upon the Exhn. Committee, by the stipulations contained in the our Prospectus. As for packing expenses, I think we shall willingly bear them. although all other Nations have borne them, - Italy, Denmark

If you will send for Mr. Sachs you will hear that he made a present in your name of several exhs to [?] reserved two exhs. for you & offered all the rest without exception to the Fischerei Verein knowing from the experience of your boxes when they arrived here that nearly everything will arrive at its destination utterly spoilt if not destroyed, I answered Mr Sachs by return that I should entreat the Museum authorities here to keep everything. Mr Sachs your representative, answered nothing. I, therefore
  gave over everything to the Museum, in your name (excepting the above mentioned) with the understanding however that if you should change your mind or Mr. S. [or?]I have misunderstood you, each & all of those exhs must be instantly returned to you I will now, therefore, instruct the museum authorities accordingly.

'Charles to keep'

Dear Charles
In his last letter Hugh asked me to get him a copy of 'The Sunday Companion' of the 16th April 1932, as it had a picture of the Grand-father and his family at dinner. After a great deal of trouble I have managed to get a copy from the Editor of 'The Sunday Companion' as a favour on my telling them that it was a picture of the Grand-father. This picture has been shown to all here, also to Frank, Ernest etc. 'The Sunday Companion' publishers do not keep old copies for long, and the one wanted for the 16th April 1932 is a long way back for them. The picture is beautifully drawn and arranged showing very careful details. The words of description are splendid and very well deserved as the Grandfather's and Uncle Frank's good works have lasted so long. I am sending you the original picture, a typed sheet of the article, and three rough pencil tracings. Later on when you have done with it I would like to have the original picture back to send it to Hugh, as it was Hugh that found out about this. There is lovely sun here [?] and I are getting on well with the new foundations of the greenhouse and hope to make a lot of progress at it during the Easter holidays. I have been trying to help with typing some of his letters. I hope you are all keeping fairly well and taking care of yourselves.

Dear Charles

It was very good and thoughtful of you to have returned the original of the Grandfather's picture and two of the tracings everso many thanks I am going to keep one of the tracings for myself and send the other and the original picture on to Hugh by tomorrow's South African Mail. He will be very glad to get it. They were very busy in the Editor's office of the 'Sunday Companion' when I called, and I did not get an opportunity of asking where the original picture is and whom it belongs to, but if I hear anything more of interest about it I will be sure to let you know.

I have been watering the plants in the garden every evening and some of them have been shooting up fine, we mowed the lawn for the first time on last Saturday and there was quite a large amount of fresh green grass. Judging from the fine show of white blossom it should be a good apple & plum year. A fresh supply of cement and sand arrived here from the builders this morning, ready for [?] & me during Easter time.

I am really most obliged to you for your kindness in sending me the most interesting paper showing that a cross can be obtained between the Wapiti and the Red Deer. This is a step in advance and I will write a Leader about it in 'Land & Water' advising Scotch proprietors to try the experiment. I myself have no doubt that you will obtain a cross between Reeves' pheasant and the common pheasant and I fancy they will be exceedingly beautiful birds, but these Hybrids will not I think breed again. I am communicating with Mr. Barnes about the Sea Birds and I shall do my best to prevent the Association being broken up.

On Saturday last Jan 22 I received from [Dr. Vougar/Zougar?] the great Swiss pisiculturist a box containing 5000 (five thousand) eggs of the 'great Lake Trout' The Fathers and Mothers of these eggs lived in the lake of Neufchatel. Dr [Vogar/Zougar?] has desired me to present these five thousand eggs to Your Royal Highness. They are now safely lodged in the apparatus at Windsor, Mr. Menzies having sent up a man to receive them from me.
I enclose a note from [Dr. Vougar/Zougar?]. I am sure the Doctor would be very much pleased if you would have the kindness to write him a line to Neufchatel Switzerland. This donation promises well for keeping up the stock of the Obelisk Lake. I enclose a note from [Dr. Vougar/Zougar?] to Your Royal Highness

I owe you many apologies for not having written to you before to report the result of my examination of the dead Reeves pheasant. I found that the cause of death was acute inflammation of the lungs in other respects the bird was quite healthy I head from Mr. Menzies that the other pheasants are at Sandpit and dying. They should at once be removed to a dryer and a warmer place or I fear you loose more of them
