I am exceedingly obliged to you for taking such interest in the poor Seals I sent you Copies of all the papers. It will be very good indeed of you if you will put them before the Crown Prince - The 'French Society for the Protection of Animals from Cruelty' have awarded me a medal (not yet received) for my Seal paper. I am most obliged for your kind offer about the Museum I will write you a separate letter about this. I open the Aquarium at Manchester next Thursday and give evidence about Eels at Gloucester on Saturday

I beg to send you some more papers about the poor Arctic Seals. The matter I hear will come before the House of Commons in a day or do, probably the papers will be distributed on Thursday or Friday next. On the part of the poor Seals may I ask you kindly to submit one of the enclosed to Her Majesty. This is taking a great liberty but I am sure Her Majesty would be willing to throw her protection over the poor Mother and Baby Seals in the far distant Arctic Ocean.

I am exceedingly obliged to you for your very kind letter received this morning and an more than gratified that Her Majesty the Queen has been good enough to express her approval of my [Report?] It has been I assure you a real pleasure to have been able to enquire into and report upon a question of practical Natural History of this kind. I promise Your Royal Highness not to write a word about it to the Public press - I am very much obliged to you for sending me the Photograph which is of the highest interest to me, you will find the whole matter of Stag horns treated in my new book, a copy of which I hope to send you on Monday or Tuesday. I have received some eggs of the 'pinnated Grouse' or 'Prairie fowl' from Richard Valentine Esq. of Wisconsin, America through the Editor of 'Forest & Stream' New York. I send you half a dozen of these eggs (the others are gone to Mr. Bartlett) and shall feel much obliged to you if you would order them to be placed under a sitting hen immediately. The American letter is dated June the 24th I am therefore afraid that the eggs won't come to much, but never the less it might interest you to see them, and I shall be very obliged if you will give them a trial.

I have had a beautiful drawing of the Deer's leg in situ made, and intended (as you gave me leave) to publish it in this week's Land & Water. On receipt of the drawing from the Keeper I sent for the Artist who said he could make a nice drawing out of it. So with your permission we will wait till both blocks are ready - I have lent the Artist a drawing of a German Red Deer which you saw when you kindly came here - to fill up the details. As regards the foot itself - I sent it to my friend [Rulich?] he is a working German Stuffer the very best in the world he does the work for many of the big shops - He has some splendid things at his place. If you could call I am sure you would be pleased with the heads and horns.
I have been confined to the house with bronchitis and assure you do not like being on the sick list at all.

I have been at work nearly all day at the Deers Foot [?]. the Printer said he must have 20 lines more to fill up the page see copy enclosed so you see I have taken the liberty of using the information Your Royal Highness kindly sent me this morning. If you will kindly send copies of the paper to owners of Deer Forests in Germany and I will forward copies as I am anxious to obtain as much information as I can for you.

[Breton?] has been here. He agrees with me that the marks in the last Fox's skin are the marks of a dog's teeth and I have tried the holes with the fangs in the skull of a hound and they match exactly. I will look up the tests of Strychnene Please send me the other Foxes - I agree with Your Royal Highness the matter is very mysterious and ought to be settled.

I have seen Mr. Bartlett of the Zoological about your pheasants
1st He quite agrees with me that dampness is the cause of the malady and that therefore if it be possible the birds should be removed to a dryer place
2 He agrees with me that the place where they are confined should be roofed over, if the birds can not be removed.
3 He thinks that they should have pepper corns and that the person who feeds them should mix up some pepper corns in the food if they will not eat the pepper corns placed for them to pick up
4 We think that gravel is better than turf but that the best thing for them to walk on would be old brick and mortar rubbish - Mr Lee will make enquiries about the mole skins for them. The best man to dress them is Mr [Rulich] 8 Bettisland Street Hoxton. You can easily get enough for a waistcoat this year.

Will you allow me to beg your acceptance of a copy of our Deep Sea Fishery report which we have just presented to Parliament through Mr. Cross. Please especially look to my History of Sea Fishes Appendix No.2 Page 178. You will also see that I have followed the [?] you once gave me at the Museum and have given at P 246 a table showing the fish in season during every month of the year. I am now getting ready for the Berlin Fishery Exhibition which is to be held in April 1880.
