Dear Charles

It was very good and thoughtful of you to have returned the original of the Grandfather's picture and two of the tracings everso many thanks I am going to keep one of the tracings for myself and send the other and the original picture on to Hugh by tomorrow's South African Mail. He will be very glad to get it. They were very busy in the Editor's office of the 'Sunday Companion' when I called, and I did not get an opportunity of asking where the original picture is and whom it belongs to, but if I hear anything more of interest about it I will be sure to let you know.

I have been watering the plants in the garden every evening and some of them have been shooting up fine, we mowed the lawn for the first time on last Saturday and there was quite a large amount of fresh green grass. Judging from the fine show of white blossom it should be a good apple & plum year. A fresh supply of cement and sand arrived here from the builders this morning, ready for [?] & me during Easter time.

I am ashamed of you as ort to be as is thought to be a Natteralist about them ere lions in Daniels den. Yes they hev fine Manes no doubt in the Pictur and you ar all right Sir about the [?] of the 3 year old at our establishement Mr Jamrach as gos in for the ould testiment he says they niver had South African black manes in Nebukednezers country. You may hev seed the Maneless lion as was in the Zoological sum years back and cum from North of India. Well I tuk my missus a Whitmunday to the Kademy and seed the pictur cost me two bob and a Whituesday we went to the british Museum free gratis and tuk her into the [?] where Nebukednezers hartist has drawed in stone the Assisirrian Lions in a way as shows that he observed ther nature and must have bin the sort that ort to have med a mil of Daniel and they have no more Manes nor the Maneless lions as are now in North Indier. Its all right what you say of the Kademy hartists that they should observe nature more and I says they should not go to the Cap to get lions for Daniels den but other folk besides hartists should look to nature and the geograffical dustribution of beastes.

Dear Mr Buckland
I had the pleasure of receiving your friend Mr. [Wattel] yesterday afternoon & think him a very intelligent, very modest man. He accompanied me to a sort of public Conference, in which I had to take the chair, about Sea-fisheries, & I introduced him to our Minister of Agriculture & ½ a dozen of our leading men. This morning I shall meet him & he shall then be introduced to all our Foreign Commissioners, such at least as are here. The next time you do me the honor of writing pray mention the state of your health. On Saturday (tomorrow morning) an official visit to the English Dept. is planned, in which my brother & I will show your Exhibits, as well as we can!

With my best compliments to Mrs. Buckland, & to your sister Mrs [Bunyan?] whom I had the pleasure of meeting the other day,

Dear Mr. Frank Buckland
I could not think what had become of you, that you should have been located at Windsor, for so many months never entered by head - I am however glad to find you are in the land of the living, and hope you will long remain here. How very much I feel for the Queen, to lose one she so dearly loved - one so young that she might have ensured his life for years, one so gifted and so highly thought of by all. His death is a national loss - yet His Royal Highness is happier than even Her Majesty could have made him here. I have given £10 to the [?] Society but they have not acknowledged it in any way. I sent it on the 9th of last July thro' Coutts Bank perhaps they don't send a receipt for what is paid thro' a Bankers. You must excuse this. I am writing by candle light and my eyes are so bad that I cannot see to make a letter even with spectacles.
If you can tell me one thing of Her Majesty, pray do - as to how she is and how she bears her loss
