Tomorrow Tuesday I propose to send down for your inspection a most beautiful screen representing Spring and Summer flowers painted from nature by my good sister Mrs Gordon. If you would be so very kind as to submit the screen to H.R.H. The Princess I should feel it is a great compliment to the family still more so should any opportunity occur to show it to Her Majesty The Queen. Mr Serle (my Secretary) will also submit to Your Royal Highness a cast of your Monster Pike. Another cast painted by Mr Rolfe will be shortly send for your acceptance.

Dear Mr. Buckland
Your first boxes arrived the very morning of Thursday when I had heard from you. They were unpacked under my eyes. The man who was employed by us declared that in his experience of this Exhibn nothing had arrived in so desperate a state of packing [so?] as these boxes! I am sorry to say that much glass, & much plaster too, was smashed. Whatever can be mended, is now in the hands of a very experienced man from the Zool Museum, & I hope the Crown Prince will when visiting us officially on the Opening Day -20th- see everything in a pleasant condition & be most favorably impressed. We are at a loss to imagine what can have induced Mr. Johnson to send off the boxes so late. It is impossible to do full justice to those exhibits which arrived after the opening day which was announced months and months ago! Several boxes are advised today. I hope that yours of Wednesday last may be among the number, & assure you that your exhibits, even if we should not get them until a few hours before the opening shall be placed to the best of our ability. - I say ‘ours’ because my brother Theodore is assisting me. The Committee were delighted when I could announce to them today that you are in a fair way of recovery.

My dear Mr. Buckland
I am truly delighted to learn from your letter of the 24th that your health has derived benefit from your stay at Margate. No time shall be lost by me in obtaining from the Office of sending to you the calculation, with vouchers, of the carriage to Berlin
The cost of carriage from Berlin to London devolves upon the Exhn. Committee, by the stipulations contained in the our Prospectus. As for packing expenses, I think we shall willingly bear them. although all other Nations have borne them, - Italy, Denmark

• do - do - do. If you will send for Mr. Sachs you will hear that he made a present in your name of several exhs to [?] reserved two exhs. for you & offered all the rest without exception to the Fischerei Verein knowing from the experience of your boxes when they arrived here that nearly everything will arrive at its destination utterly spoilt if not destroyed, I answered Mr Sachs by return that I should entreat the Museum authorities here to keep everything. Mr Sachs your representative, answered nothing. I, therefore
  gave over everything to the Museum, in your name (excepting the above mentioned) with the understanding however that if you should change your mind or Mr. S. [or?]I have misunderstood you, each & all of those exhs must be instantly returned to you I will now, therefore, instruct the museum authorities accordingly.

On Saturday last Jan 22 I received from [Dr. Vougar/Zougar?] the great Swiss pisiculturist a box containing 5000 (five thousand) eggs of the 'great Lake Trout' The Fathers and Mothers of these eggs lived in the lake of Neufchatel. Dr [Vogar/Zougar?] has desired me to present these five thousand eggs to Your Royal Highness. They are now safely lodged in the apparatus at Windsor, Mr. Menzies having sent up a man to receive them from me.
I enclose a note from [Dr. Vougar/Zougar?]. I am sure the Doctor would be very much pleased if you would have the kindness to write him a line to Neufchatel Switzerland. This donation promises well for keeping up the stock of the Obelisk Lake. I enclose a note from [Dr. Vougar/Zougar?] to Your Royal Highness

Mr Bartlett called on me by accident this morning. I told him that you were looking out for ducks for Frogmore. He told me that since your visit to the Gardens he had been looking out for ducks for you and he gave me the enclosed paper from which it appears that he now has a chance of getting for you 36 Birds for 10£. This I consider to be wonderfully cheap.
I write immediately to your Royal Highness to tell you about it. Mr Bartlett would like to have an early answer as to whether you would like the birds or not. Thanking you for all your kindness last Wednesday

I owe you many apologies for not having answered your very kind letter before. I have been overwhelmed with work. I have received a note from Mr. Menzies and have received your instructions from him. I hope to be at Windsor next Saturday morning at 11.15 and will do whatever your Royal Highness wishes - I should much like to inspect the breeding troughs by the Obelisk Lake

I am exceedingly obliged to you for taking such interest in the poor Seals I sent you Copies of all the papers. It will be very good indeed of you if you will put them before the Crown Prince - The 'French Society for the Protection of Animals from Cruelty' have awarded me a medal (not yet received) for my Seal paper. I am most obliged for your kind offer about the Museum I will write you a separate letter about this. I open the Aquarium at Manchester next Thursday and give evidence about Eels at Gloucester on Saturday

I beg to send you some more papers about the poor Arctic Seals. The matter I hear will come before the House of Commons in a day or do, probably the papers will be distributed on Thursday or Friday next. On the part of the poor Seals may I ask you kindly to submit one of the enclosed to Her Majesty. This is taking a great liberty but I am sure Her Majesty would be willing to throw her protection over the poor Mother and Baby Seals in the far distant Arctic Ocean.
