My Dear Mary

In the [?] [?] of the weather there may be risk of taking cold by exposure to it. I had better continue here to arrange Papers that must require attention. [Mr Saumaurez?] wrote to Mr Arrowsmith proposing that he should take the duty at Islip and begin his [?] on the 13 Jany. I have a note today from him accepting by Invitation to the Rectory for a day or 2 on his arrival and in reply I invite him to arrive on the 12th to take his first Sunday on the 13th.
I hope the frost will have ended before the 12th. You had better not think of moving while the weather continues in its [?] severity. I had no memorandum of money advanced on [?] to poor [fellow?] nor do I remember to what time I paid him last but his Bill is in my Tin Box at Islip in a Packet labelled Paid Bills by next post Pray forward a large letter from Oxford for Mr Lawlor sealed properly with a silvered [wafer?] it is Mr Lawlor's Gas [?] which I should return to him immediately. It will be the size of a large sheet of foolscap.

I have two Germans on my hands, and the university inspectors in my Museum [?] my hands wh. are as full as they will can be but I have just time to say that I shall endeavour to be in Town and that I shall be most happy to meet you at the Salopian. Of course our Oxford plan is knocked on the head or rather it never came to a head. We do not however give up hope of visiting you and I shall mention to my friends your most hospitable intentions but I don't think it will do for us to quarter our hungry corps upon you. But enough of this at present.

The bearer Mr Rifaud has been spending about ? Days in Cambridge among other things seeking subscriptions for his great work on the natural history of [the] Antiquities of Egypt and Nubia. I dare say to have seen a few [?] of his work and [?] [rapport?] of it by [?] Of the [Parisien?] [?]. His collection of drawings is truly astonishing, they are the wealth of twenty two years almost [?] labour. His very body is no small [curiosity] as it bears the mark of about 17 wounds from the spears of [Arabs?]. Which seem to have been stuck in his body to [?] as arrow heads seen in the thighs of the [?] [?]. I have taken the liberty of giving him a letter to you believing that you will be delighted to [?] his drawings, be happy to make his signature, to put him on the [?] of knowing some of your librarians and other book buying people. Pray what are you doing at Oxford about Carrier's monument [?] me a letter from [Pentland?] on the subject but the stupid Irishman then gives me no address. Pray do you know if I am [?] to him?

Having collected a basket full of Coprolites and Sepias, the large Sepia I hope you will think illustrative - nearly the whole of the Coprolites came from the Coprolite or fish ledge there is two of these ledges about eight feet apart. I have no doubt myself but that they were dropped quietly were we now find them and that the Ichthyosaurus fed on scaly fish you will find two together to prove this in some measure. I have also sent two fragments of the first [chamber?] of the Ammonite with that black [undescribed?] substance, it positively is not any portion of the shell do not go calling me a fool remember the Tortise footsteeps. Sir have you observed in the Sepias a substance resembling Coprolite besides the sack or ink bag - In thinking over Miss Philpot's collection I reccolected two little rings which we could not make out at the time I found them. It is very probably that they may be the sepia rings. Miss P has kindly given me one of them for you. Mr de la Beche and myself a few days back went down to search the Red Marle we found a pretty vegetable and fish scales in it as black as those found in lias. How is Mrs Buckland and the two dear boys. I trust by this time you have welcomed a little stranger I hope it is a girl like her mother and you need not wish for anything better on Earth, please to present my best respects to Mrs. B. Should you wish for any more Cops. or Sepia please to write word
