William Herbert St Quintin was a British naturalist. He was a keen ornithologist, keeping a private collection of birds including Great bustards, a secretary bird and a tui. He was a founding member of the Avicultural Society in 1895, president of the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union in 1909, a member of the British Ornithologists' Union from 1883 to 1922 and also served on the council of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds from 1908-1919

Bachelor's degrees in Agriculture from Reading and Physiology from Cambridge, and a Cambridge PhD in Physiology. Jewell held appointments as Lecturer in Pharmacology at the Royal Veterinary College, Research Fellow at the Zoological Society of London, Professor of Biology in Nigeria, Lecturer in Zoology at University College and Professor at the Royal Holloway College, London, and Professor of Physiology of Reproduction in Cambridge. In 1959 he became a member of the Zoological Society of London's Breeding Policy Committee and later the Gene Bank Sub-Committee. He made a major contribution to the foundation of the Rare Breed's Survival Trust

Matthews, Leonard Harrison

Leonard Harrison Matthews was a British Zoologist, especially known for his research and writings on marine mammals.

Matthews was born in Bristol, and attended Bristol Grammar School. He studied biological sciences at King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a first-class degree in 1922. He was involved with the British Colonial Office backed Discovery Investigations from 1924 to 1929, during which he was largely based on the subantarctic island of South Georgia studying the biology of whales and southern elephant seals. He then held an academic position at the University of Bristol. During the Second World War he worked on radio communications and radar. He served as Scientific Director of the Zoological Society of London from 1951-1966.

The Berling Zoological Garden is the oldest surviving zoo in Germany. It was the second zoo in Germany after the short lived 'Thiergarten' in Hamburg-Horn. The aquarium opened in 1913. The first animals were donated by Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, from the menagerie at Pfaueninsel island and pheasantry of the Tiergarten
