The Singapore Zoo, formerly known as the Singapore Zoological Gardens or Mandai Zoo, is a 28 hectares (69 acres) zoo located on the margins of Upper Seletar Resevoir within Singapore's heavily forested central catchment area. It is operated by the Mandai Wildlife Reserce, which also manages the neighbouring Night Safari, River Wonders and Jurong Bird Park
The Bostock menagerie dynasty originated with James Bostock (1814-1878), who started working at Wombwell's menagerie in 1838 after leaving the family home. In the years following his employment with Wombwell, James progressed from horse keeper to contracting and advertising agent and became instrumental in attaining two Royal Commands for exhibition at Windsor Castle for Queen Victoria in 1847 and 1854.
The core axis of this dynasty would be carried over by three of them: Edward Henry, who became the successor to his father' James William, who managed a separate menagerie business and sideshow; and Frank Charles, who set off on his own direction touring the UK, Europe, and America.
Although Bostock and Wombwell continued presenting menageries until the first third of the 20th century, strands of the family diversified into alternative types of business as early as 1897, when Frank's brother, Edward Henry, opened The Scottish Zoo. Edward became one of the most prominent members of the Bostock family in the 20th century, expanding his business operations to the travelling circus, which included The Royal Italian Circus (formerly Volpi's Circus) and several Hippodromes and picture palaces.
Bostock and Wombwell's Menagerie showed for the last time at the Old Sheep Market in Newcastle on December 1931 with many of their animals ending their days in zoos and museums across the country
The Philadelphia Zoo, located in the Centennial District of Philadelphia on the west bank of the Schuylkill River, is the first true zoo in the United States. It was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21st 1859, but its opening was delayed by the Civil War until July 1st 1874. For a brief time, the zoo also housed animals brought to the U.S> from safaris by the Smithsonian Institution, which had not yet built its National Zoo. Dr William Camac of Philadelphia had travelled throughout Europe in the 1850s and visited London Zoo. Upon returning to the U.S. he advocated to build a zoo in Philadelphia
The Berling Zoological Garden is the oldest surviving zoo in Germany. It was the second zoo in Germany after the short lived 'Thiergarten' in Hamburg-Horn. The aquarium opened in 1913. The first animals were donated by Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, from the menagerie at Pfaueninsel island and pheasantry of the Tiergarten
Chessington World of Adventures Resort is a 128 acres theme park, zoo and hotel complex in Chessington, Greater London, England. The complex originally opened as Chessington Zoo in 1931; the theme park aspect was developed by The Tussauds Group, debuting in 1987 as one of the first combined animal-amusement parks in the United Kingdom. The zoo was started by Reginald Stuart Goddard, who had bought the estate to showcase his private collection of animals. It was once the largest private zoo in England. After Goddard died in 1946, the Pearson Publishing Company took over the zoo and managed it until 1978, when The Tussauds Group, a subsidiary of the Pearson Group, took control
The Jardin zoologique du Québec is a former zoological park located in the borough of Charlesboug in Quebec City. Opened in 1931, it has been closed since March 31st 2006. Part of its land is open to the public under the name of Parc des Moulins. It was founded at the instigation of the Quebec Minister and Deputy Minister of Colonization, Hunting and Fisheries, Hector Laferté and Louis-Arthur Richard, when it was decided to add a zoological conservation mission to a project for an experimental farm for the breeding of fur animals
Parque Lecocq is a nature reserve northwest of Montevideo, Uruguay. It houses mammals and birds and protects flora and pursues and supports breeding programs. It is adjacent to protected wetlands. Its mandate is to be a "support centre for biodiversity conservation both nationally and internationally". The zoo houses one of the largest communities of the Addax antelope (a critically endangered species) in the world
Antwerp Zoo is a zoo in the centre of Antwerp, Belgium, located next to the Antwerpen-Centraal railway station. It is the oldest animal park in the country, and one of the oldest in the world. Since its foundation, the park has been controlled by De Koninklijke Maarschappil voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen, a society originally called the a society originally called Société Royale de Zoologie d'Anvers (The Antwerp Royal Society for Zoology). Its first director was renowned zoologist and botanist Jacques Kets. He accepted this position on one condition: a museum had to be built to house his nature-historical collections. This building was inaugurated in 1944 by H.M. King Leopold I
The Moscow Zoo was founded in 1864 by professor-biologists, K F Rulje, S A Usov and A P Bogdanov, from the Moscow State University. In 1919 the zoo was nationalized. In 1922, the ownership was transferred to the Government of Moscow and has remained under Moscow's control ever since
