Portsmouth City Museum is a local museum in Portsmouth, England. It is one of six museums run by Portsmouth Museums, part of Portsmouth City Council. The museum is housed in a Grade II listed building. The building dates from the 1890s and was previously part of the Clarence and Victoria Barracks complex, which apart from the museum block, were demolished in 1967. It became the museum in 1972
The Orgeon Zoo, originally the Portland Zoo and later the Washington Park Zoo, is a zoo located in Washington Park, Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest zoo west of the Mississippi River. It is owned by the regional Metro government. It all began with two bears purchased by Richard Knight - one brown bear and one grizzly. A former seaman turned pharmacist, Knight began collecting animals from his seafaring friends. He kept his collection in the back of his drug store on Third & Morrison streets. When caring for the animals became too large a responsibility he sought to sell them to the city of Portland. Instead of buying the animals, the city offered to give Knight two circus cages and allowed him to place the caged bears on the grounds of City Park (now called Washington Park)
Sir Robert Ker Porter was a Scottish artist, author, diplomat and traveller. Known today for his accounts of his travels in Russia, Spain, Portugal and Persia, he was one of the earliest panorama painters in Britain, was appointed historical painter to Tsar Alexander I of Russia and served as British consul in Venezuela
Annie Porter (married name Fantham) was an English zoologist and Honorary Parasitologist to the Zoological Society of London. Annie Porter was the daughter of S. Porter of Brighton. After studying at University College London, she moved to the Quick Laboratory in Cambridge. From 1914 to 1917 she was Beit Memorial Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge. In 1915 she married fellow zoologist Harold Benjamin Fantham. From 1917 to 1933 Porter was Head of the Department of Parasitology at the South African Institute for Medical Research in Johannesburg. She was also Senior Lecturer in Parasitology at the University of the Witwatersrand. From 1933 to 1938 she was a research associate in zoology at McGill University
