Auckland Zoo opened in 1922, experiencing early difficulties mainly due to animal health issues. By 1930 a sizeable collection of animals had been assembled and a zoological society formed. The zoo consolidated during the Second World War and was at that time under the leadership of Lt Col Sawer
A small group of British and foreign bird-keeping enthusiasts met in Brighton in 1894 with a view to forming a society devoted to their interests. The newly formed society started with 52 members. In November of that year, the first issues of the society's magazine carried an editorial in which the joint editors proposed that members should be known as aviculturists

Constantine Walter Benson was a British ornithologist and author of over 350 publications. He is considered the last of a line of British Colonial officials that made significant contributions to ornithology. Benson worked on the collection of birds catalogue in the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology and was one of the founders of the British Ornithologists Union
