Osbert Salvin was an English naturalist, ornithologist and herpetologist, best known for co-authoring Biologia Centrali-Americana (1879-1915) with Frederick DuCane Godman. In 1871 Salvin became editor of The Ibis. He was appointed to the Strickland Curatorship in the University of Cambridge, and produced his Catalogue of the Strickland Collection. He was one of the original members of the British Ornithologists' Union. He produced the volumes on the Trochilidae and Procellariidae in the Catalogue of Birds in the British Museum. One of his last works was the completion of Lord Lilford's Coloured Figures of British Birds (1897). Salvin was a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Linnean, Entomogical and Zoological Society of London. At the time of his death he was Secretary of the British Ornithologists' Union.

Anthony Salvin was an English architect, known mainly for house design in Tudor style and the restoration of a number of castles and churches. He was born in 1827 in Sunderland Bridge, County Durham to General Anthony Salvin Snr, and his second wife Elizabeth Mills. He was educated at Durham School, and for a time he worked under the Scottish architect John Patterson. He first moved to London in 1821 and is said to have worked in the office of John Nash. He was married in 1826 to his cousin Ann Andrews Nesfield with who he had 6 children, including the naturalist Osbert Salvin. He was awarded the royal gold medal from RIBA in 1863. He died in 1881 at his house Hawksfold in Fenhurst, Sussex.

Henry Shakespear Stephens Salt was an English writer and campaigner for social reform in the fields of prisons, schools, economic institutions, and the treatment of animals. He was a noted ethical vegetarian, anti-vivisectionist, socialist, and pacifist, and was a literary critic, biographer, classical scholar and naturalist. Salt is considered by some to be the "father of animal rights", having been one of the first writers to argue explicitly in favour of animal rights, rather than just improvements to animal welfare in his Animals' Rights: Considered in Relation to Social Progress. He formed the Humanitarian League in 1891
