John Stevens Henslow was an English Anglican priest, botanist and geologist. He was a friend and mentor to his pupil Charles Darwin. In the summer of 1831 Henslow was offered a place as naturalist to sail aboard HMS Beagle to survey South America, but his wife dissuaded him from accepting. Seeing a perfect opportunity for his protégé, Henslow wrote to the ship's captain Robert Fitzroy telling him that Darwin was the ideal man to join the expedition team

Sir William Jackson Hooker was an English botanist and botanical illustrator, who became the first director of Kew when in 1841 it was recommended to be placed under state ownership as a botanic garden. At Kew he founded the Herbarium and enlarged the gardens and arboretum. His son, Joseph Dalton Hooker, succeeded him as Director of Kew Gardens

In 1832 he was elected as editor of the club's journal, The Entomological Magazine, and the following year became a Fellow of the Linnean Society and one of the founder members of the Entomological Society of London
