      History

      The Yangon Zoo is the oldest and the second largest zoo in Myanmar. The first collection of wild animals in Yangon began in 1882 in connection with Phayre's Museum, then situated at the present site of Yangon General Hospital. The zoological gardens was formally opened as the Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens in honour of Queen Victoria. In 1951, the then Burmese government changed the name to Rangoon Zoological Gardens and Parks
